A soldier stands on a rock
Overlooking a burning village, a war zone of greed.
Hatred burns inside of him.
A feeling of uselessness fills him up, wanting to come to their need.
He grips his rifle tighter.
If only he were earlier, if only he’d been quicker, if only.
He looks out across the horizon,
Over the war zone in the eyes of the setting sun.
He’s been given a job to do,
But to ignore the people and to think about the things that could be done?
He grits his teeth.
If only they could see the terror he can see, if only they could see the look on the people’s faces, if only.
He looks into the sky, up into the heavens.
The time for him to act is now.
No more waiting, no more suffering,
Time to pick them up from a place so low.
If only this could’ve been done sooner, if only this didn’t happen, if only.
